TRIDENT TECH INTERNET RADIO’S REPORTERS EXPERIENCE SPOLETO ‘09
Radio instructor Marcia P. Warnock and several radio students participated again in coverage of the Spoleto Festival USA, the world’s most comprehensive arts festival, founded in Charleston in 1977 by composer, Gian Carlo Menotti. Warnock has been covering the festival since its inception and saw an unparalleled opportunity for her students to be exposed to world class art and its creators.
Radio student Melvina Ravenel thought it was a great first time experience. “Research must be involved to ask intelligent questions,” she said. “And it was the first time I’ve ever experienced Spoleto, which I’d considered outside of my cultural norm. I should have known about the Alvin Ailey Dance Company, but I’d never heard of it. I loved it! Now I’m passing it on to my 8 year-old son.”
TTC’s Internet Radio brings stories about Festival performers to its world-wide audience every year. Other students involved, besides Melvina Ravenel, include Shefvon Rivers, and Felicia Allyn, as well as English professor, Dr. Richard Hartnett, and Warnock, herself. Performers and events covered include “Don John,” “Dogugeshi,” “Beverly Watkins,” “Rene Marie” and Festival orchestra members. Vox pops (voice of the people) reviews of performances were also collected.
Student reporter Ravenel concluded that “it was a real eye opener of what is to come and what I want to do.”
Interviews of participants are aired regularly on Trident Technical College’s Internet Radio, located at ttcradio.com. The station airs talk and music during the day and plays music at night. Podcasts of individual Spoleto pieces can be found at ttcradio.mypodcast.com. Search May 1st, 2009 through August 2009.
